How to Donate to Charity as a Gift in India

What do you give someone who genuinely does not want another thing?

One answer is to give in a way that reflects what they care about.

A charitable donation can be a meaningful gift when it supports a cause that matters to the person you are celebrating — whether that is animal welfare, education, healthcare, the environment or another issue close to them.

But there is an important difference between making a donation because you could not think of a present and making a donation because you know the cause means something to them.

The second one is the gift.

Can you donate to charity as a gift in India?

Yes. You can make a donation to an eligible charitable organisation and dedicate the gesture to someone you are celebrating. The exact process varies by NGO: some may allow a dedication or gift message, while others simply process the donation in the donor’s name.

If a tax deduction or donation certificate matters to you, it is important to check the NGO’s eligibility and the donor details used for the transaction before paying.

How to give a charitable donation as a gift

1. Start with the person, not the charity

Think about what they genuinely care about. The most meaningful cause is one that reflects their values, not simply the organisation you personally support.

2. Choose a credible organisation

Review the NGO’s own website, its stated programmes and relevant registration or tax information. If 80G eligibility matters, verify that rather than assuming every charitable donation qualifies.

3. Decide who should be recorded as the donor

This matters if a donation receipt or tax certificate is expected. The donor is generally the person making the donation and whose details are recorded by the NGO; a dedication to someone else does not automatically transfer the tax benefit to that person.

4. Make the donation through the organisation’s supported payment flow

Use the NGO’s official donation mechanism or a trusted platform that clearly identifies the beneficiary organisation and the payment flow.

5. Add the personal part

Tell the recipient why you chose that particular cause for them. A short note can turn a transaction into a meaningful gesture.

6. Keep the receipt or certificate

If the donation is eligible and you intend to claim a deduction, retain the relevant donation information and certificate issued by the eligible organisation.

Does every charitable donation qualify for an 80G deduction?

No. Section 80G of the Income-tax Act applies to donations to specified funds and eligible charitable institutions, subject to the conditions and limits applicable to that donation.

The Income Tax Department also distinguishes between donations eligible for 100% or 50% deduction and between donations with or without qualifying limits. Cash donations above ₹2,000 are not eligible for deduction under Section 80G.

For an eligible NGO, the organisation is required to report qualifying donations and furnish the donor with the prescribed certificate. Form 10BE is the certificate used for donations reported under the Section 80G framework under the Income-tax Act, 1961.

Whose name should be on the donation receipt?

If you are donating as a gift for someone else, distinguish between the person being celebrated and the legal donor.

For tax and certification purposes, the relevant donor details should correspond to the person who made the donation and is entitled, where applicable, to claim the deduction. You can still tell the recipient that the donation was made in celebration of them.

This is also the principle Faves follow for Causes: the charitable contribution can celebrate someone else, while the receipt or eligible tax certificate is associated with the actual donor.

How to choose a cause that feels personal

  • Animal welfare for someone who actively cares for or advocates for animals
  • Children’s education for someone passionate about learning and opportunity
  • Environmental conservation for someone who cares deeply about sustainability
  • Healthcare-related work connected to a cause they support
  • Community or livelihood programmes aligned with their values

You do not need to choose the most dramatic cause. Choose the one that makes the recipient say, “You remembered that this matters to me.”

When is a charity gift a good idea?

  • The person has said they do not want physical gifts
  • They already support a particular cause
  • It will genuinely make them happy because how passionate they’re towards a cause
  • They prefer meaningful or low-clutter gifts
  • You are celebrating a milestone and want the gesture to have a wider impact
  • The recipient has explicitly chosen charitable giving as one of the ways they would like to be celebrated

How Faves approaches Causes

Faves is being built so people can choose from curated Causes backed by selected NGO partners and share the Causes that matter to them on their profile.

Their Faves can then choose to support one of those Causes as a way of celebrating them. The aim is simple: charitable gifting should start with what the person actually cares about, not with guesswork.

A charitable gift should still feel like a gift

Do not stop at the payment confirmation screen. Tell the person what you supported, why you chose it for them and what made you think of them.

The donation does good. The thought behind it is what makes it personal.

Note: Tax treatment depends on the donor, the organisation, the payment method, the applicable tax regime and other conditions. This article is general information and is not tax advice.

Frequently asked

Can I make a charity donation as a gift for someone in India?

Yes. You can donate to a charitable organisation and dedicate the gesture to someone else. Check the NGO’s process if you want a gift message or dedication.

Can I donate in someone else’s name and claim 80G?

A dedication and the legal donor are not necessarily the same thing. If you intend to claim a deduction, ensure the eligible donation is recorded with the correct donor details and follow the NGO’s documentation process.

Are all NGO donations eligible for 80G?

No. Eligibility depends on the fund or institution and the applicable conditions under Section 80G. Verify the organisation’s status before assuming a donation qualifies.

Can I claim 80G for a cash donation?

Under current Income Tax Department guidance, no Section 80G deduction is available for a cash donation exceeding ₹2,000.

What is Form 10BE?

Form 10BE is a certificate of donation issued under the Section 80G reporting framework by an eligible organisation after the relevant donation reporting process.

Who receives the donation receipt when the donation is a gift?

The receipt or tax certificate should correspond to the actual donor details used for the donation. The person being celebrated can still be named in a dedication or personal message where the NGO or platform supports it.
